Radio Interviews

A series of interviews conducted in Spanish and recorded at KGNU Community Radio's studios as part of "Pasa La Voz" (eng: "Spread the Word"), which airs every Sunday from 4 pm to 5 pm.  The interviews cover topics of interest for the Latino community in Boulder County and beyond.  Below that section is a space designed for our members to contribute their own topics and add them to this space.  To view contributions from our community, click here or scroll down.

Astrid and Molly:

Student Displacement

Researchers Molly Hamm-Rodriguez and Astrid Sambolin Morales conducted sight visits and interviews to evaluate the impact of Hurricane María on K-12 students who fled the island and were displaced to Osceola County, and now face language  barriers, housing instability and culture shock.

Gabriela Buitrón and Alex Ortega: Activist Dreamers

Gabriela Buitrón and Alex Ortega are both Dreamers (DACA recipients) and community organizers for the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition (CIRC).  They discuss the situation of Dreamers in the US after the 2016 presidential election results, and what can be done to organize for the protection of their DACA status.

David Nieto:

Multicultural Education

David Nieto, is an assistant research professor and the Executive Director of the BUENO Center for Multicultural Education at the School of Education of the University of Colorado, Boulder.  David talks about the challenges and the opportunities that a multicultural education presents to students and educators in this day and age.

Nino Gallo & Guio Bravo: Latino Seniors

Nino Gallo directs the Personal Investment Enterprise (PIE) program for Boulder County.  PIE's mission is to provide tools that empower people with low-income to save and build assets to strengthen their economic stability.  Guio Bravo is a bilingual medicare counselor for Boulder County.

Max Nealon: Undocumented Students 

Max Nealon is a counselor for one of the high schools in the Boulder Valley School District (BVSD).  Max is also a self-described singer/songwriter, therapist and spiritual seeker.  Max talks about the stress experienced by undocumented students in BVSD, and how we, as a community, can better support them.

Yadira Caraveo & Raúl Galindo: Manage Stress

Yadira is a pediatrician who is running for public office and Raúl is a psychotherapist.  They talk to us about stress in children, especially Latinx youth in today's political climate, both in school and at home, and especially in light of recent school shootings and the Education Secretary's intention to arm teachers with weapons.

Sonia Marquez and Angel Sanchez: The Future

Sonia and Angel are a husband and wife team of activists in favor of immigration reform.  They work with Latinx youth to become community organizers, using art and creative forms of expression.  Sonia was recently awarded the Peacemaker of the Year award from the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center.

Patricia y Guadalupe:

Empowerment & U Visa

Patricia Molina and Guadalupe Cardoza are both Mexican by birth.  They arrived in the US many years ago, as undocumented immigrants, in search of a better life for their young families.  In both cases, they have been able to stay here on "U" Visas, for the protection of victims of violence.  These are their stories.

Carmen y Ray Ramírez:

Latino Leadership 

Carmen and Ray Ramírez are activists by vocation.  Ray is a long-time advocate for native nations in the US, and Carmen is the Community and Neighborhood Resources Manager for the City of Longmont.  They promote self-determination and leadership for the native tribes and Latino community.

Leticia Abajo and her child, Ollie, who is a Junior in high school, talk about the new gender-neutral pronouns in the Spanish language, and the need for parents to respect, understand, support and learn from their gender-fluid kids' identities.  Leticia helps underrepresented populations and Ollie is a gender-fluid person.

Violeta Chapín:

Immigrant Rights

Violeta Chapín is a Law Professor at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and an expert in immigration law.  Born to an immigrant mother, she started her career working as a public defender in Washington, D.C., and ever since, has advocated for underprivileged populations.

Carmen y Ray Ramírez:

Liderazgo Latino

Carmen and Ray Ramírez are activists by vocation.  Ray is a long-time advocate for native nations in the US, and Carmen is the Community and Neighborhood Resources Manager for the City of Longmont.  They promote self-determination and leadership for the native tribes and Latino community.

Pilar coordinates CU Dialogues Program at CU Boulder in order to bring diverse members of the community together with students to talk about complex subjects like gender, class and race. Ximena Serrano is a scholar of Latin American  and U.S Latinx literature and cultural studies, her work moves across genres of literature, film, visual arts and performance.

Manuela Sifuentes as Director of Community Partnerships between  CU Engage and community organizations promotes collaborative projects that aimed to serve marginalized populations. She talks about the first Noche de Peña hosted by the Dairy Center for the Arts in Boulder. Peñas serve as a way to resist injustices in Latin American with live music, poetry and improvise informal participation.
